SR22 Insurance Explained

SR22 can be a confusing subject to some.  SR22 is basically a document that is filed to the Illinois Secretary of State that verifies insurance coverage.  If you’ve been convicted of driving with no insurance, DUI, DWI or an accident with no insurance, it is likely that you need SR-22 in Illinois.

Here’s the good news!

Do You Own a Vehicle? Owner vs. Non-Owner SR-22

The SR-22 you need in Illinois depends on whether you own a vehicle:

  • Owner SR-22: for drivers who own a vehicle and need SR-22 filed on their own auto insurance policy.
  • Non-owner SR-22: for drivers who need an SR-22 but don’t own a vehicle, using a non-owner auto insurance policy.

The Illinois Secretary of State refers to these as an Owner’s Certificate and an Operator’s Certificate (a combined Operators-Owners Certificate is available for drivers who need both). In Illinois, an SR-22 generally must be maintained for three years. Learn more from the Illinois Secretary of State.

Need SR22 but don’t own a vehicle?  A non owners SR22 may be your best option.  A non owners SR22 insurance policy is a basically as it sounds, insurance for a person with no vehicle.  Non owners SR22 insurance costs vary based on your driving history and the coverage required.

What Happens If Your SR-22 Lapses?

If your SR-22 expires or is cancelled, your insurance company is required to notify the Illinois Secretary of State, and your driving record will be suspended. The suspension cannot be lifted until the SR-22 filing is reinstated. To avoid a lapse, renew your SR-22 insurance at least 45 days before it expires.
