This guide explains the Illinois Insurance Verification System, reference numbers, online access and payments, first and repeat suspensions, and common problems such as incorrect VINs. The Secretary of State’s instructions and your specific case determine the required next step.
What is ILIVS, and is ILIVS.com legitimate?
ILIVS stands for the Illinois Insurance Verification System. It supports the Illinois Secretary of State’s electronic checks of vehicle liability insurance. ILIVS is not an insurance company, an insurance policy, or a service that sells coverage.
Yes, ILIVS.com is the legitimate portal linked from the Secretary of State’s mandatory insurance page. For a safe starting point, follow that state link or use the official vehicle-owner notice page. A search result, forum post, or review is not a substitute for checking the actual website address.
The state says liability coverage is checked electronically at least twice a year. When the first attempt does not verify coverage, there is a follow-up check after 30 days. If coverage still cannot be verified, the registered owner receives a notice requesting evidence for the original verification date.
Insured ASAP is a separate insurance agency. Our Illinois agents have been registered to use and electronically file auto insurance policies with ILIVS since 2021. We provide assistance; we are not the Secretary of State or the operator of the state portal.
How to read an ILIVS insurance verification notice
Read the date the state is asking about before buying a policy or attempting a payment. These four details are the starting point:
| On your notice | What to check |
|---|---|
| Verification date | Was this vehicle insured on that specific date? Identify the insurer that covered it then. |
| Reference number | Use this case identifier when speaking with the insurer or opening the official notice portal. |
| Response deadline or scheduled suspension date | Act by the instructions on your letter. Do not assume that a pending suspension is already an active suspension. |
| Vehicle information | Compare the plate and VIN with the vehicle and the relevant policy documents. |
View the state’s official sample notices to see where these details appear. This explanation is not a replacement notice or a state form.
If the vehicle was insured on the verification date
Contact the company or agent responsible for that coverage and provide the ILIVS reference number. Ask for the applicable insurance information to be reported electronically. If you changed insurers, the company that insured you on the earlier date may need to respond. A current insurance card alone does not establish what was in force then.
If the vehicle was not insured on the verification date
Buying insurance now can provide coverage going forward, but it cannot create coverage for a past uninsured date. Follow the state’s instructions for the case, including any suspension and reinstatement requirements. For a vehicle that was not being operated because it was stored or inoperable, read the separate exemption and submission explanation rather than assuming a new policy resolves the notice.
The official ILIVS questions and answers explain the electronic reporting process. If you do not understand what your letter requests, ask our team to review it with you for free.
What mandatory car insurance is required in Illinois?
For a typical Illinois personal auto policy, the Illinois Department of Insurance lists these minimum limits:
| Coverage | Minimum limit |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident |
| Property damage liability | $20,000 per accident |
| Uninsured motorist bodily injury | $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident |
ILIVS checks liability insurance compliance. Comprehensive and collision coverage are not substitutes for the required liability coverage, and a lender or lease agreement may require additional coverage. Meeting a coverage limit does not fix an incorrect VIN or prove that the policy existed on the verification date.
Searching for “new Illinois car insurance requirements”? Start with the current state guidance above. An ILIVS notice is a verification request—not evidence that the state has introduced a new insurance product or a different minimum just for your vehicle.
ILIVS reference number lookup: what to do if you lost the notice
Your ILIVS reference number identifies the notice or case. The public vehicle-owner form asks for the reference number, license plate number, and five-digit ZIP code shown on the notice. It is not a public form that retrieves a missing reference number from a VIN alone.
Insured ASAP can help find a missing reference number at no charge. Send your license plate number or VIN privately by text to 708-233-4848 or email. We verify that you are the registered owner or authorized to discuss the vehicle before sharing case information. You do not have to buy insurance from us.
Our ILIVS Assistance Hub is the contact page for this same agency, and not a second company. It explains how to reach our team for a lookup or help understanding the notice.
Is an ILIVS VIN lookup the same as a vehicle history search?
No. A VIN decoder or vehicle history report does not establish your ILIVS case status. Our reference-number assistance uses the vehicle information you provide and appropriate authorization. If the problem is a VIN entered incorrectly on the policy, use the VIN mismatch checklist below.
How to Find Your ILIVS Reference Number If You’ve Lost Your Notice
Losing the notice from the State of Illinois can be stressful, but there are ways to retrieve the necessary information. Here are a few steps you can take:
- Work with Insured ASAP: Our team can assist you in resolving insurance compliance issues, including helping you locate your ILIVS reference number and filing insurance information directly with the state. We can also look up your ILIVS reference number using your license plate number or VIN number. Lookup your ILIVS reference number now by sending us a message.
- Contact the ILIVS Assistance Hub: Reach out to the ILIVS Assistance Hub online. Provide your vehicle’s vin number or license plate number and your personal details to verify your identity and an attendant can check your ILIVS reference number.
- Check Your Email (If Applicable): Some notices may have been sent via email if you opted for electronic correspondence when registering your vehicle. Check your inbox for a PDF attachment.
ILIVS Illinois login: use the vehicle-owner notice page
To access your notice, open the official ILIVS vehicle-owner page. Have the following ready: your reference number, license plate number, and the five-digit ZIP code as shown on the notice. Confirm the owner or authorized-representative statement only if it applies to you.
The consumer notice form is different from an insurer or agent account. You do not need to create an insurance-agent account to use it. If the form does not accept the information, compare it with the notice before trying again. If the reference number is missing, use reference-number assistance instead of guessing.
For a technical problem with the portal, the official ILIVS contact page lists support@ilivs.com. Do not send payment-card details or passwords to our agency by text or email.
ILIVS payment online: how to pay a reinstatement fee
The state registration reinstatement fee for an insurance-related suspension is $100 when reinstatement is required. Receiving an ILIVS notice alone does not mean a payment is due. First address whether you had coverage on the verification date and what the case currently requires.
Steps to make a payment
- Have the required insurance information reported. Contact the insurer or agent authorized to submit the applicable information. A policy purchase by itself does not complete this step.
- Open the official ILIVS notice page. Enter the reference number, plate number, and ZIP code requested on the form.
- Use the payment option when it becomes available. ILIVS says its “MAKE PAYMENT” button appears after current compliance information has been provided. If it is missing, check the reporting step and case instructions instead of buying another policy automatically.
- Pay the state directly and check the result. Save your payment confirmation and review the case status. A receipt alone is not permission to operate a vehicle whose plates remain suspended.
The official ILIVS guidance says no separate clearance notice is sent. Confirm that the registration has been cleared before anyone drives the vehicle; a required repeat-suspension period still has to be satisfied.
Who receives the payment?
The customer pays the Secretary of State through ILIVS. Insured ASAP does not collect, remit, or pay this state fee. We provide the official link and walk you through the process at no charge. A new insurance policy, when needed, has its own premium separate from the state fee.
For the complete process after an active suspension, see how to reinstate suspended Illinois license plates. This is a vehicle-registration process; a driver’s license suspension has separate requirements.
ILIVS penalties: first suspension versus a repeat violation
An insurance-verification notice, a registration suspension, and a traffic conviction are different events. Read the notice and current case status before deciding which consequence applies.
| Situation | What it means |
|---|---|
| Verification notice | Respond with the applicable information by the notice’s instructions. The notice alone is not an automatic $500 traffic fine. |
| First insurance-related registration suspension | The state describes reinstatement with current insurance evidence and a $100 fee, without the four-month repeat-violation waiting period. |
| Qualifying repeat violation | Illinois law generally requires four months from the effective suspension date, current insurance evidence, and the $100 fee for a second or subsequent violation within the preceding four years. |
| Driving while uninsured or while plates are suspended | Separate traffic penalties can apply. A new policy or a payment does not authorize driving while a suspension remains active. |
Does a second letter always mean a four-month suspension?
No. Another notice is not automatically another established insurance violation. Under 625 ILCS 5/7-606, the repeat rule depends on the violation history and statutory conditions, not simply how many letters arrived. That section also addresses violations of Section 3-708. Have the state clarify the classification and effective date when they are unclear.
Paying sooner or buying insurance now does not shorten a required four-month period. The Secretary of State lists the same $100 reinstatement fee for first and repeat suspensions; the added waiting period is not a higher ILIVS reinstatement fee.
What about the $500 or $1,000 penalties I see online?
The state lists a minimum $500 fine upon conviction for operating an uninsured vehicle and a minimum $1,000 fine for operating while plates are suspended for a previous insurance violation. Those are not charges automatically imposed merely because one electronic verification failed. Do not drive the vehicle while its plates remain suspended.
Already insured? Check for an incorrect VIN
We regularly hear from drivers whose vehicle information does not match the insurance record. A VIN entry error can be part of the problem. Our team may ask for a clear photo of the VIN on the dashboard or door label so we can help compare the information—not guess at the correct number.
- Read the VIN from the vehicle. Take a clear photo privately; do not post it in a public comment.
- Compare it with the relevant policy and notice. Identify any characters that differ and check which vehicle and coverage dates are involved.
- Ask the insurer to review a policy error. If the policy record is wrong, the insurer must determine the appropriate correction. If the registration or notice is wrong, follow the state’s correction instructions.
- Confirm the necessary reporting. Ask whether the corrected or applicable coverage information has been submitted for the ILIVS case. A corrected document alone does not establish that the state record is resolved.
We help identify the mismatch and explain who to contact. We do not alter the vehicle’s VIN, backdate coverage, or guarantee that a data correction will remove a suspension. Contact our team for free help comparing the information.
What if the vehicle was stored or inoperable?
Illinois law recognizes an exemption for qualifying stored or inoperable vehicles that are not operated, subject to the Secretary of State’s rules. The statutory exemption and ILIVS instructions matter here—not simply a statement that the car was parked.
ILIVS describes an electronic affidavit and signature process using the reference number. Our team listens to the circumstances, explains the information relevant to the notice, and directs the owner to submit it to the state. We do not decide whether an exemption or other relief is approved.
Information to organize before asking for help
- The verification date, notice deadline, and when the vehicle became inoperable or entered storage.
- Whether the vehicle was operated during the period in question.
- Existing dated records that explain the situation, such as repair orders, towing records, or storage records, if available.
- The specific information or documents the state requests for your case.
These are preparation examples, not a universal list of documents the state requires or must accept. Follow the state’s actual instructions and do not invent or change records. We can help you understand what to gather and where to submit it directly.
Do not ignore the notice while gathering information. The official ILIVS instructions also direct the owner to notify the insurance company or Secretary of State before operating a stored or inoperable vehicle on Illinois roads again.

Looking for ILIVS reviews or asking whether the notice is real?
Check legitimacy using the official state links above. Reviews of an insurance agency describe that agency’s service—not the state program. More questions about ILIVS notices
Can I resolve this without going to a DMV office?
Many notice responses and applicable fee payments can be handled through the insurer’s electronic report and the official ILIVS website. The exact process depends on the case. Use the state’s instructions if you need an alternative; do not assume every facility handles insurance-related reinstatement.
What if I sold the vehicle?
Explain the sale to the state rather than purchasing coverage solely to answer a notice for a vehicle you no longer own. The ILIVS FAQ describes surrendering plates and requesting plate revocation if plates registered to you are no longer in your possession. Follow the process that applies to your case.
Does an ILIVS notice mean I need SR-22 insurance?
Not automatically. ILIVS insurance verification and an SR-22 financial responsibility filing are different requirements, although some drivers may have both. Read the specific notice and ask the state or your agent what filing is required before purchasing something you may not need.
I paid online. Why should I still check the status?
The payment is one step. Required insurance reporting and any applicable suspension period must also be satisfied. ILIVS does not send a separate clearance notice. Check the case result and do not operate the vehicle while its plates remain suspended.
