Before You Pay: Check the Verification Date
Find the verification date on the letter from the Illinois Secretary of State. This is the date on which the state tried to confirm insurance for your vehicle.
If the vehicle was insured on that date, contact the insurer or agent responsible for that coverage. Give them the ILIVS reference number from your letter and ask them to submit the insurance information electronically. An incorrect VIN or mismatch in policy details may need to be corrected.
If the vehicle was not insured on the verification date, buying insurance now will provide coverage going forward but will not establish coverage for that earlier date. If your registration is already suspended, you will need current liability coverage and must complete the reinstatement requirements.

How to Reinstate Suspended Illinois License Plates
Step 1: Confirm the Suspension and Whether It Is a Repeat Offense
Read the notice for the effective suspension date and any earliest reinstatement date. Another letter is not automatically another established violation.
- First insurance-related suspension: The state describes reinstatement with current evidence of insurance and a $100 fee, without a four-month waiting period.
- Qualifying repeat violation: Under 625 ILCS 5/7-606, a second or subsequent violation within the preceding four years generally requires four months from the effective suspension date, current evidence of insurance, and the $100 fee. The section also covers Section 3-708 violations; the state must clarify which rule applies to your case.

Step 2: Obtain or Confirm Current Liability Insurance
You need active Illinois liability insurance for the vehicle. If your policy is already active, have your insurance details ready. If coverage has lapsed, Insured ASAP can compare available policies and help you obtain new coverage.
The cost of the policy is separate from the state’s $100 reinstatement fee. Your premium depends on the vehicle, drivers, coverage, and insurer; the state fee is not your insurance down payment.
Step 3: Have the Insurance Information Reported Through ILIVS
Give the insurer or agent handling the report your ILIVS reference number. Insurance information must be transmitted electronically for the applicable case.

If another company insured the vehicle on a past verification date, that company or its agent may need to report the earlier coverage. Purchasing a policy alone does not confirm that the ILIVS case has been updated. Check that the required information has been reported.
Step 4: Pay the $100 Fee and Check Your Status
Use the official ILIVS notice page with the reference number, plate number, and ZIP code shown on your notice. The state’s ILIVS FAQ says the “MAKE PAYMENT” button appears after current compliance information has been provided. If the option is not available, confirm the reporting and case instructions first.
When the $100 reinstatement fee is due, you pay the Secretary of State directly through ILIVS. Insured ASAP can send the link and guide you at no charge; we do not collect or remit the state fee.
Save the receipt and check the case status. ILIVS does not send a separate clearance notice. Payment is not permission to drive until the suspension is cleared, and it does not shorten any required repeat-suspension period.

For online reinstatement, use ILIVS.com. Its payment option appears after the required current compliance information has been provided. Insured ASAP can send you the payment link; you pay the state fee.
The Secretary of State also lists selected facilities that can process reinstatement in person and provides a mail option in its Mandatory Insurance Division FAQ. Check the state’s instructions if your case cannot be completed online. Do not assume every facility processes this transaction.

Can anyone drive my car while its plates are suspended?
No. Illinois says no one may operate the vehicle while its license plates are suspended. The registered owner may drive a different vehicle that is properly insured, provided they are otherwise permitted to drive it.
I bought insurance today. Are my plates automatically reinstated?
No. The required insurance information must be reported, the state fee must be paid when due, and the case must show that the suspension has been cleared. For a repeat offense, the four-month period must also end.
I lost my notice and ILIVS reference number. What should I do?

What if the vehicle was stored or inoperable?
ILIVS provides an electronic affidavit process for a vehicle that was stored or inoperable. It uses the reference number from the notice. Review the state’s instructions for your case, and notify the insurer or Secretary of State before returning the vehicle to Illinois roads.
What if I sold the vehicle?
Tell the Secretary of State rather than purchasing insurance for a vehicle you no longer own. The ILIVS guidance discusses surrendering the plates and, if you no longer possess them, requesting plate revocation. Our agents can help you understand the notice you received.
Is a suspended license plate the same as a suspended driver’s license?
No. This page addresses an insurance-related suspension of the vehicle’s registration and plates. A driver’s license issue may have separate requirements. Read the specific state notice you received before paying a fee or purchasing a filing you may not need.
Is an ILIVS Suspension the Same as an SR-22 Requirement?
No. ILIVS checks whether a registered vehicle has liability insurance. An Illinois SR-22 is a separate proof-of-financial-responsibility filing that may be required for a driver’s license matter. Some people may have both issues at the same time, but an ILIVS notice does not automatically mean that every vehicle owner needs an SR-22.
Why did I receive a notice if I already had insurance?
The electronic system may not have matched the vehicle and policy information. Contact the company or agent that insured the vehicle on the date shown in the notice and ask them to review the record.
