Understanding The Insurance Verification System

The Illinois Secretary of State uses ILIVS (Illinois Insurance Verification System), a third-party database where insurance companies must report active policies. At least twice per year, Illinois cross-checks this database with registered vehicles to identify uninsured vehicles.

When a vehicle isn’t matched with active insurance, the state sends a verification letter, to which the vehicle owner must respond promptly. Failure to verify auto insurance coverage can lead to license suspension and a mandatory $100 reinstatement fee. Those who drive with suspended plates are subject to a minimum fine of $1000.

FAQ about License Plate Reinstatement in Illinois

What Is an Insurance Verification Letter?

If your vehicle’s VIN number isn’t matched to an active insurance policy in ILIVS, you’ll receive a written request for insurance verification. Receiving this letter means you must take action to either verify your insurance or get coverage to prevent suspension.

What If I Had Insurance Already?

If you had liability insurance on the verification date, you must provide the letter to your insurance company or an agent registered with the Illinois Insurance Verification System (ILIVS). The agent will electronically transmit your insurance information to ILIVS using your license plate number, VIN, and/or a reference number provided by the ILSOS.

How Do I Check If My Plate Is Suspended?

If you need to check if your license plates are suspended in Illinois, you can run a search on the Illinois Secretary of State’s website. This will show you details about your vehicle including whether your license plates are suspended, registration expiration date, address, and license plate lookup.

Need help checking if your plate is suspended? Contact us with your ILIVS reference number, VIN number, or license plate number, and we’ll check your status immediately.

What Happens If I Get Pulled Over With Suspended Plates?

Law enforcement takes suspended plates very seriously. If you’re caught driving with suspended plates, you’ll face a minimum fine of $1,000, and your vehicle can be towed immediately (at your own expense). You’ll also be responsible for towing and storage fees at the impound lot.

The total cost of getting pulled over far exceeds the cost of proper insurance and reinstatement. Don’t risk it – contact us to get your plates reinstated legally before driving your vehicle.

What Happens If I Don’t Get Insurance By The Verification Date?

If you don’t have insurance by the verification date, and it’s your first offense, your license plate will be suspended. It cannot be reinstated until you purchase the minimum liability insurance policy and pay a $100 reinstatement fee.

What If My Vehicle Is Inoperable?

If your vehicle is not being driven on Illinois roadways and is stored and inoperable, you will be required to fill out an electronic affidavit with an electronic signature. Once the vehicle is back in running condition, the Illinois Secretary of State must be notified.

What If I Sold My Vehicle?

If the vehicle has been sold and your license plates are no longer being used, you may surrender your license plates at any Illinois Drivers License Facility.
